Dead Space Review
Ever see Event Horizon? Ever think that it would make a great videogame? Well EA Redwood Shores spacebound splatterfest has somewhat quietly appeared, lurking in the darkness, waiting for you to walk by, ready to grab your leg and drag you down the carcass-strewn hallways of the Ishimura, a deep-space mining craft that may have dug a little too far this time. Read on.
Overview
A new IP and a definite dark horse this holiday season, Dead Space puts you in the shoes of Issac Clarke (Issac Asimov + Arthur C. Clarke nod FTW) who finds himself exploring the deepest reaches of a very large spacecraft that has seen better days. It's best described as a 3rd person survival horror shooter. It has some backtracking (ala Metroid) but it's all fairly straightforward thanks to the mapping and objective tracking interface.
Speaking of interface, there is no HUD in Dead Space, and being an interface geek, this is one of my favorite things about the game. Ammo remaining displays in a hologram on the gun, the health meter runs up the spine of your suit, and your stasis meter (think "single target bullet time") sits right next to that, built right into the character. Access the inventory and holograms come up beside your character and do not pause the game. Need to check your map? Better make sure your safe before you do. The interface design is not only brilliant, it's perfect for this type of gameplay, adding to the tension.
Graphics
Dead Space is one great looking game. It's visuals are completely appropriate for the mood. You're on the same ship for 95% of the game, but the developers did a good job of differentiating the levels. There will be a few "holy shit" moments where you just can't believe what you're seeing.
Sound
The soundtrack is perfectly moody when things are quiet and quickly turn into dissonant, unsettling chords when things get frenetic. Probably the best work with sound comes when you enter the vacuum of space. It's not completely silent (like it would be, I guess) but everything is quiet, delayed and hollow sounding. Got 5.1? You might catch yourself holding your breath when the airlock opens and you enter the abyss.
Gameplay
Dead Space owes a bit to Resident Evil 4 for it's perspective, but as it did in RE4, works well. As I said, the interface is completely integrated into the character and is part of the gameplay, which works well. There are 12 levels, and most of time your goal is to paste this derelict of a ship back together again so you can get the hell off of it. It may seem short, clocking in at 12-15 hours, but achievements, suits, and upgraded weapons are rewards to replay. I rarely replay these types of games but I've started a second run through. It's not as scary, of course, but my weapons are so powerful it's a bit more fun.
Another unique element to the Dead Space gameplay is dismemberment. You can't kill the Necromorphs by popping their head off. You need to slice limbs. The more carnage the better. I usually sliced the legs off first and, as the nasty continues to crawl toward me, take off an arm. Usually that's enough to stop it. The more you play and the better your weapons the more surgical you can be. It's actually quite depraved and satisfying.
The bad news? There is a cockpit shooting segment (think Millennium Falcon scene) that had me seething. The aiming controls were frustrating and awkward. Also, while the game got creepier as it progressed in terms of environments and enemies, it seemed to get less scary - less shocking.
One more gameplay note. The anti-gravity zones and the spacewalking stuff was epic fun. I wish there were more of that.
Overall
For me, Dead Space came out of nowhere. I bought it on a whim and I was really surprised. I had no pretext, no expectations and I ended up thoroughly enjoying it from start to finish. It delivers on graphics, mood, innovative interface and gameplay on almost every level.
